Award bestowed on organizations whose exemplary partnership with NCLR has helped empower the Latino Community
July 2014, Los Angeles, CA – The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) has chosen Centro Latino for Literacy (Centro Latino) as the 2014 California Affiliate of the Year. Centro Latino was recognized at the Affiliate Leadership Breakfast on Monday, July 21st during the 2014 NCLR Annual Conference at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The award is the highest honor bestowed on an NCLR Affiliate for its exemplary work in serving its community and advancing the mission of NCLR.
Centro Latino is one of six regional affiliates to receive the award, and one of over sixty CA affiliates in NCLR’s affiliate network. Affiliates are familiar with the practical concerns and the policy issues affecting their constituencies and are actively engaged in developing and implementing innovative solutions to the problems they face. Centro Latino is also supported by NCLR conference sponsors Bank of America, Telemundo 52, Wells Fargo, and Banamex, a Citigroup company.
NCLR is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Founded in 1968, NCLR focuses on five key areas – assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health – to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. NCLR provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.
Mari Riddle, President and CEO of Centro Latino states, “It’s an honor for Centro Latino for Literacy to join the list of outstanding affiliates being recognized this year and to be added to the list of previous CA affiliate awardees, many of whom we partner with to bring our technology driven literacy course to their non-literate adult Latino community. Congratulations to NCLR for a successful conference and Latino Family Expo that offered timely, critical information and services to the Latino community.”
