The historic Tia Chuchas’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore, the San Fernando Valley’s leading center for literacy, cultural and artistic expression presents its 10th Annual ‘Celebrating Words Festival’: Written, Performed and Sung on Saturday June 6, 2015 from 1pm to 7pm at Pacoima City Hall located at 13520 Van Nuys Blvd, Pacoima, CA 91331. It’s free for the entire family. (Free Street Parking & Pacoima Library across the street).
 
This year’s theme ‘Uniting the communities in the Valley/ Pacoima is Our Home':
 
“Literacy and the arts bring communities together to discuss creative and innovative ways of enhancing our quality of life,” said Councilman Felipe Fuentes of Council District Seven, whose office is supporting the festival. “Investing in the arts and literacy is an investment in the community and I am grateful for the work of Tia Chucha’s for their continued support for this annual family event.”

Kicking off the festivities will be Tia Chucha’s resident ‘mexihca’ dance group, ‘DanzaTemachitiaQuetzacoatl, followed by a lineup of musical performances such as:  La Chamba (Cumbia), Las Bandidas (Banda), Bad Bruno (Ska), Fozzy's Hero (Punk Rock), Zipaktli (Hip Hop, Women), Mark Torres DJ Set (KPFK 90.7 Travel Tips For Aztlan), The Little Jaraneros (Son Jarocho), The Chuchas and DanzaTemachtia Quetzalcoatl.
 

Among the notable poets featured at this year’s event are the American Book Award-winning ‘Los Angeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez,’ plus authors Chiwan Choi and Reyna Grande.
 
Other festival attractions include, Mercado Pochtecayotl, offering hand-crafted items, food trucks, refreshments, and informational booths presented by various community resources.
 
“The arts and literacy, with their blend of creativity and consciousness, are catalysts for enhancing and transforming the quality of life of our communities. We invite everyone to enjoy a festive day designed to tap into and draw out the innate beauty and creative expression in us all,” comments Tia Chucha’s co-founder, Trini Rodriguez.
 
The 10th Annual Celebrating Words Festival is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, and the California Arts Council, a state agency, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and through generous support from Los Angeles Council member Felipe Fuentes, Los Angeles Council member Nury Martinez and Galpin Honda.
 
Special presentations by Poets:  Karineh Mahdessian, from ITWOW, Alex Hohman, from ITWOW, Rob Morrow, Iman Turner, Jason Oswaldo Morales and M-Tease.
 
Also present are the following Valley Community Organizations:  Youth Speak Collective, Puente (Volunteers), El Nido, El Hormiguero, Bikesan@s, HOODSisters, ALS, DCA/Big Read, Voces Indigenas, MEND, LADWP.
